Adaptogens is the name given by their discoverer, Doctor I. Brekhman, the acclaimed Russian scientist. Brekhman, head of Institute of Soviet sciences and a team of researchers spent 40 years studying these plants and their effect on the human body. It began by observing the behavior of animals that, prior to going into a stressful situation, like hibernation, gestation, or season change, would eat the certain plants. Thus began the investigation and testing, in some of the most extensive clinical trials in medical history.

“Dr Brekhman’s work with PrimeQuest, represents a genuine scientific breakthrough to enhance and improve health using only natural ingredients. His work and testing is some of the most extensive in medical history, and is a real breakthrough…” Steven Fulder, Ph D. International Authority on natural substances and author OF “The Book Of Ginseng” and others. Oxford. U.K.

As his fame grew Brekhman was called upon to supply his skills and secrets to aspects of culture in which the Soviets wished to excel. His research is considered a key factor in the success of the Russian Space Program. His supplements restored the natural balance to cosmonauts’ bodies that enabled them to withstand the enormous stressors of space travel. Even Uri Gagarin, the first man in space, used Brekhman’s Adaptogens.

In the sports arena, Brekhman’s work was an athlete’s dream: natural supplements that increased energy, stamina and strength. Stamina and endurance were extended to new levels; recovery levels of such magnitude were generated, so athletes could train longer, more often, and more intensely without experiencing fatigue or over training.

Prevention is better than cure. Prime 1 is best added to a stressful daily life to prevent stress-related diseases and the impact of stress on your body. Now Available on our NutriEats Store.

Debunking the Carbs at Night Myth

The ‘Carbs at Night’ Myth keeps cropping up and NutriEats is laying it to bed forever!

Some people are under the impression that eating carbs at night will lead to weight gain, but this isn’t true.

Weight change is dictated by the relationship between calories in and calories out (Thermodynamics) across a 24-hour period, not overnight. So If you consume most of your calories or carbs in this case later in the day, then so be it. A Caloric deficit or surplus is what’s truly important.

Our advice would be don’t fear carbohydrates later in the day. In fact, multiple studies have observed effective weight loss in subjects consuming a majority of their carbohydrates in the evening. Furthermore, there was even improvement in multiple obesity-related health parameters, and reports of feeling more full and satisfied throughout the day.We aren’t saying to abandon carbohydrate during the day but rather stop fearing it later in the day.

It goes to show you that your calorie deficit or surplus is more important for weight management than carbohydrate timing.

Also your daily schedule and routine should dictate your need for carbohydrates in the evening. If you workout perhaps in the evening, or prefer carbohydrates with dinner, go ahead and eat them. As long as you’re taking in the appropriate amount of carbohydrates in a 24-hour time span to meet your goals, you’ll be fine.

NutriEats offers Bespoke weight management programs to help you figure out your nutritional needs and requirements.

The Weight Loss Secret No-One Knows

We are constantly being told to cut out carbohydrates to loose weight but this is the worst mistake you could make, it is actually counterproductive! Here is a little secret that may change your life forever..

Carbohydrates are made up of Resistant Starch which countless studies conducted at respected universities and research centres have shown Resistant Starch helps you eat less, burn more calories, feel more energized and less stressed, and lower cholesterol.

Carbs high in Resistant Starch speed up your metabolism and your body’s other natural fat burners. As Resistant Starch moves though your digestive system, it releases fatty acids that encourage fat burning, especially in your belly.

A recent study found that the slimmest people who are happy with their weight also ate the most carbs, and the fatter overweight people ate the least. The researchers concluded that your odds of getting and staying slim are best when carbs make up to 50-60% of your total daily caloric intake.

That’s probably the equivalent of 15 slices of bread (a food we bet you’ve been afraid to eat for decades).

Most low-carb diets limit you to fewer than 20% of total calories from carbs and sometimes contain as little as 20 grams of carbs a day.

Many complex carbohydrate foods are also powerful appetite suppressants. These type of  carbs fill you up because they are digested more slowly than other types of foods, triggering a sensation of fullness in both your brain and your stomach.

Research done at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom found that consuming Resistant Starch in one meal caused study participants to consume 10% fewer calories (roughly 150 to 200 calories for the average woman) during the next day, because they felt less hungry.

According to researchers, when dieters are taken off a low-carb diet and shifted to an approach that includes generous amounts of fibre and Resistant Starch foods, they no longer have cravings because they have a more balanced diet. The fibre and Resistant Starch fills them up and satisfies them while allowing them to eat the foods they crave.

The right mix of carbs is Important to control blood sugar and keep diabetes at bay. In one study at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Center at the USDA, participants who consumed a diet rich in high Resistant Starch foods were able to lower their post-meal blood sugar and insulin response by up to 38%.

Eat the carbs you want, but you need to combine them with other foods so that they don’t cause a spike in your blood sugar. Instead of eating white rice on its own, combine it with beans, chicken, or other high Resistant Starch foods and protein that keep your blood sugar more balanced than low-carb diets.

On a hormonal level as well you’ll minimize your hunger and cravings, and keep your cortisol lower so will not be stressed. Dieters feel so empowered once they lose weight on carbs. For the first time, they are able to lose weight by eating in a balanced manner, without cutting out entire food groups.

Nutritionists agree that most people crave carbohydrates, and if you cut them out of your diet, you’ll only crave them more.

Avoid and conquer gout and kidney stones.

Do you suffer from kidney stones? Or maybe your aunt has a wild case of gout, and its

something that is always the centre of the conversation at family dinners? If so, this post

will be well worth the read! If not, this may prevent you or a friend from suffering from

either kidney stones or gout.

Oxalic acid is an organic compound composed of carboxylic acids. These are mild destructive

acids which may irritate the lining of the gut when consumed. They are found in a wide

range of foods, mainly plant foods. Many people are unaware of the importance of oxalic

acids in the body; they play a major role in the metabolism of plants and animals such as

humans.

Like any other compound, oxalic acid is required by our body in specific quantities. Too

much oxalic acid in the body may negatively affect the absorption of calcium due to the fact

that it binds to it and gets converted into indigestible oxalate salt, otherwise known as

kidney stones. In most cases the kidney stones are small enough to be passed out in the

urine. However, further development can lead to blockages in the urinary tract which can

cause severe pain in the abdomen area and in some cases lead to nasty and seriously painful

infections.

We only get about 20-40% of oxalates from the food we eat. The remaining percentage can

be made in the body from amino acids such as hydroxyproline in the liver, vitamin C or

glyoxylate in the red blood cells. Foods that contain high amounts of oxalate and may cause

over accumulation in the body are Rhubarb, chocolate, spinach, beet, almonds and other

nuts. However, in chocolate the oxalate content varies- it increases with the percentage of

cocoa present. For example 100% dark chocolate has a greater quantity than 80% dark

chocolate. White chocolate has a very low level of oxalate.

Gout

Purines are well-known for their role as building blocks in DNA and RNA, but they are more

than that. Purines have their own special receptor systems which allows them to connect

with the cell membranes of different cells within the human body. In the cardiovascular

system, they play a role in assisting with correct heart function through blood flow and

oxygen delivery. In the digestive system they assist in fluid secretion and the movement of

food through the gut. They are also quite important in other biological molecules such as

ATP and NADH.

Purines, like oxalates are widespread in foods. They are commonly derived from offal, game

meat such as rabbit, venison or pheasant, oily fish, most seafood, meat and yeast extracts

such as marmite or Bovril and mincemeat.

Once in the body they are broken down to form uric acid. The formation of uric acid crystals

may increase the risk of developing gout, a type of arthritis, due to the deposition of these

crystals in the joints. This leads to stiffness and difficulty in movement. However, studies

show that people with high vitamin C diets are less likely to develop gout as vitamin C may

be a counteractive that inhibits uric acid from crystallising. If the kidneys become too

saturated with uric acid, they may bind with calcium and form salts that build up into kidney

stones. Hence too much purine will have similar effects to high oxalate levels in the body.

To prevent this from occurring, foods that contain high levels of oxalate and purine may

need to be eliminated or limited in the diet in order to control the build up of salts in the

kidney and the crystallisation of uric acid, which leads to kidney stones and gout

respectively.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

You’re probably aware that the brain acts as the central command organ in the human body. It sends and receives nervous impulses to and from different regions of the body to control external and internal movements such as scratching your nose and respiratory functions such as breathing.

But I bet you didn’t know that the gut is often referred to as the ‘second brain’. The gut is the secondary organ which plays major roles in our cognitive functions and blood chemical levels and therefore greatly effects our physical and mental wellbeing. A healthy gut system results in a healthy mind! In other words, ‘you are what you eat’, meaning the foods and drinks you consume will determine the way your mind and body will function. If you do not receive the nutrients required by your body, you may start feeling down and stressed out.

You may have noticed the latest ‘detox’ trend to hit the food and health industry. Everyday companies are pushing products and books aimed at convincing you that the way to feel healthier and happier, and the key to losing weight is through fad diets, ‘magic’ pills and cleansing detox teas. This is wrong. Your body has the ability to detox itself simply by incorporating a good nutrition plan and regular exercise. The liver is the most important detoxifying organ in the human body. It converts toxic substances such as alcohol and saturated fat, and allows the body to excrete them from the kidneys.

Good nutrition is vital to prevent a build-up of these toxic foods in the body. The digestive system breaks down the food into the nutrients it requires and provides a barrier to block toxins from getting to the rest of the body.

Exercise, meanwhile, helps to rejuvenate your body by washing out all the toxins in sweat and also boosts your bodies recycling system allowing it to destroy cancerous growths and stop metabolic dysfunctions such as diabetes and obesity. However, this is also highly dependent on how you fuel your body.

Exercise also benefits your mental health by increasing concentrations of the chemicals, norepinephrine, endorphin, GABA, serotonin and adrenaline. Each of these chemicals play a role in alleviating anxiety, creating a sense of calmness, reducing stress, helping your body conquer any mental tension, improving self-confidence, and boosting your feelings of self-worth and creativity. They also increase your heart rate and blood pressure, thus boosting your energy level.

The NutriEats Lean and Clean in 6 weeks program is designed to help you achieve all this, and to help you feel and look your best. We will be supporting you through every meal choice and workout routine, and focusing on what you are eating and how it’s affecting your body both physically and mentally. By the end of the 6 weeks you will feel refreshed, healthier and more content with yourself.

Once you receive your Lean and Clean in 6 program, you will see that it provides a guided introduction to a healthier lifestyle with an easy-to- follow exercise plan and simple diet. It will help you understand the link between your body and mind, and you will begin to pave the way towards a cleaner and more desirable lifestyle.

We want you to feel motivated and encouraged by your results! We also want to help you feel satisfied with your way of living. So join us on the journey to creating a better you!

THE BEST WAY TO GET RID OF A HANGOVER

It’s Sunday morning and you’re re-evaluating your life choices. You think back to last night. You had an amazing time, you danced a lot, posed for photos and at one point in the night burst out into song. It was a great time, but the resulting hangover isn’t quite worth it. You feel sick, your head is pounding and all you really want is for the ground to swallow you up. It feels likes you drank the contents of the entire bar last night.

Sprawled across the couch, you make a promise to yourself that you will never drink again. You may also be bargaining with God saying that you will not drink as much if He promises to see you through the hangover. You know your limit now and you won’t cross it again.

The bad news is that it’s inevitable that this experience will happen again, unless you quit drinking altogether. The good news is there are ways to ease the pain, and help you feel a little better about yourself.

What really happens when you have a hangover?

Like any other organic compound, the body takes time to break down alcohol.

During this period, the nauseated feeling that you experience is generally your body’s way of telling you that something is seriously wrong. Alcohol is a diuretic, which essentially means that it makes you pee a lot more as your kidneys are unable to hold onto the water and thus water is lost far quicker. This causes severe dehydration which explains the headaches and pounding head symptoms.

In addition to this, the body is unable to absorb nutrients because alcohol decreases the secretion of the enzymes needed to break them down. Even though alcohol provides more calories than proteins and carbohydrates, none of the nutrients can be absorbed and so the body does not get what it needs. That’s why you look so terrible when you’re hung over, and probably feel it too.

But don’t stress, we’ve got you covered! Below are a few tips to aid your body in the recovery stage of the hangover.

What to do:

  1. Exercise – this basically follows the whole ‘sweat it out’ theory. After a night out, all that alcohol you consumed is circulating in your bloodstream. By exercising you’re increasing your heart rate and getting your body working. The alcohol can then be broken down quicker. However, don’t forget to keep hydrated, because if you are not keeping your body hydrated, hitting the gym may worsen your symptoms.
  2. Drink lots of water – you probably didn’t drink any water on your night out and that’s why you landed in this horrible situation in the first place. But it’s not all your fault; alcohol causes you to lose about 1/2 of the water already in your body water, so no matter what it will still make you severely dehydrated. Drinking lots of water throughout the hangover period will help speed up the recovery stage and will help with the splitting headaches and dry mouth.
  3. Drink electrolytes – although a lot of people recommend drinking isotonic drinks like Powerade or Lucozade, we suggest trying out H2Pro Hydrate tablets. H2Pro Hydrate tablets contain almost no calories so they are already much better for you than any sports drinks, which are pumped with sugar and God knows what other chemicals. H2Pro Hydrate tablets will re-hydrate the body and assist in electrolyte replacement as they are designed to provide your body with only what it needs.
  4. Eat food and lots of it – eggs are supposed to be a miracle hangover cure food because they contain the vitamin B12 which helps with the healthy regulation of the nervous system. Eating mild carbohydrates such as toast or crackers may also help to soak up some of the alcohol and give you a boost.
  5. Painkillers – alcohol and painkillers should definitely not be mixed! Avoid taking painkillers within 12-14 hours of your last drink because you must give the alcohol a chance to leave the digestive system. Painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol may be taken to minimise headaches and cramps after this period. However, if you are a frequent drinker try to avoid taking medication every time as this may cause even more detrimental effects to your liver and stomach lining. Some medications may also react with the alcohol, which could be more damaging to you.
  6. Sleep – you probably want to do this anyway, why lie you probably just want to die at this point, but sleeping it off will actually help as it allows your body to metabolize the alcohol quicker and make you feel better.

What not to do:

  1. Don’t drink more alcohol – as people commonly say the ‘hair of the dog’ is the best cure to the hangover. It isnot. Hair of the dog means drinking more alcohol. You may be tempted to pop a cold one, but all it will really do is increase the alcohol level in the body and simply numb and prolong the existing hangover. It also increases your dependence on alcohol and lowers your tolerance.
  2. Don’t drink coffee – even though coffee is the go-to for most people, it is in fact not the best remedy or even a remedy at all. Coffee is a diuretic, meaning it causes your kidneys to expel even more water, dehydrating you further, which doesn’t help matters at all. It will actually make your headache far worse. On top of the hangover headache, once the initial sugar rush from the coffee dies out you’ll be left with a caffeine withdrawal headache too. So maybe it’s better to resist it altogether to make the recover time easier and quicker.
  3. Don’t eat greasy food – even though greasy food sounds super appetising when you’re drunk and goes down better than anything else, it is in fact not the best idea. You are better off sticking to nuts, seeds, lean meats or mild carbohydrates. Try some high protein, gluten-free muffins with no artificial sweeteners; they will make you feel a lot better and are much healthier for you.

HOW UNDER-EATING IS PREVENTING YOU FROM LOSING WEIGHT!

We live in a world where we are constantly exposed to ‘mira-cle’ weight-loss plans, fads and extreme diets that promote chronic under-eating.

We live in a world where we are constantly exposed to ‘miracle’ weight-loss plans, fads and extreme diets that promote chronic under-eating. These quick fixes tell us that all we need to do to lose weight is create a big caloric deficit I.e eat very little and move a whole lot more. This is not true. Not consuming enough macronutrients (protein, carbs and fats) and calories causes many health problems and drastically impedes your ability to lose weight.

Below are 8 signs that demonstrate that you may be under eating and sabotaging your weight loss.

 1. You can’t seem to lose weight.

If you are not eating enough and creating a caloric deficit that is larger than 500 calories a day your body will adjust it’s metabolism. It’s simple, your body doesn’t like drastic change and responds to it by adjusting your caloric output which means it’s holding on to that weight you’re trying to get rid of! Aim to create a deficit between 200-500 calories a day.

2 You can’t get pregnant

Not consuming enough calories can lead to infertility and amenorrhea in women. A woman who suffers from amenorrhea experiences menstrual irregularity, meaning that she is not releasing an egg during her ovulatory period (it doesn’t always translate into a missed period). If this is happening due to under-eating, she may experience adrenal fatigue and euthyroid sick syndrome. If you are experiencing any difficulty getting pregnant and have a history of dieting your eating habits may be causing infertility.

3, Your blood sugar goes up and down.

People who under eat are likely to have low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar is generally defined as anything below 70 mg/dL. Common symptoms  include dizziness, weakness, confusion, hunger, shaking, mood changes and sweatiness. In order to ease these symptoms people will often eat sugary foods, which causes their blood sugar to go up and down drastically. In order to lose weight sustainably, you need to be consuming a diet that keeps your blood sugar and hormone levels stable.

4. You are hangry

Hangry (a combination of hungry and angry) is a slang term that describes that feeling you get when you’re famished. This happens because (as previously mentioned) when you under-eat your blood sugar drops, which results in your brain not being able to function at it’s best. This effects your ability to cope with stress, resist impulsive and aggressive behaviours, control your attention and regulate your emotions. If your mood fluctuates from happy to angry or you have developed a short fuse, it may be attributed to your extremely low calorie diet.

5. Your sleep pattern is all over the place.

Struggling to fall asleep or waking up in the middle of the night  s another symptom of under-eating that is caused due to low blood sugar levels. When you fall asleep at night, your blood sugar level naturally drops. To stabilise it, your liver kicks into gear and releases glycogen. If you are not consuming enough calories your liver won’t have enough glycogen to release and will release stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline instead in order to promote the process of making new glucose. If these stress hormone levels are high enough, you will wake up. Eating enough calories will prevent this from happening and will allow you to get a full night of restful sleep.

6. You’re always constipated

Under eating causes constipation for two reasons. The first reason is there may not be enough food in your system to produce waste and hence regular bowel movements. The second reason under eating causes constipation is due to low levels of your active thyroid  hormone (T3) which occurs when you’re not consuming enough calories. When T3 drops, your gut doesn’t function as it should causing constipation. You should be having a bowel movement every two days. If you aren’t, you may be under eating.

 7. You’re always cold

A low calorie diet can cause your body temperature to drop for a few reasons. Your body requires a certain amount of calories to generate heat, which means if you’re not ingesting enough calories your body temperature will also drop. Low insulin and hormonal changes (symptoms of under eating) also causes your body temperature to drop. So if you’re always cold, even when the sun is out, it may be a sign that you are not eating enough!

 8. You’re losing hair

Losing your hair is one of the first signs you that you are not consuming enough calories and or protein. A drop in sex hormones progesterone, testosterone and oestrogen, which happens when you under eat, also causes hair loss. In order to stop the hair loss, you must ensure that you are eating enough calories and a protein-rich diet with lots of nutrients.

HOW NUTRIEATS CURED MY PCOS

Whether you know it or not, It’s likely that someone in your life has suffered from PCOS. PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome refers to a hormonal disorder resulting from small cysts which grow on a woman’s ovaries. It is fairly common, affecting 1 in 5 women.

Well-known personalities such as Victoria Beckham and Emma Thompson have all suffered from PCOS, yet it’s still a topic that is not discussed enough. You, like many people out there, may have never heard of it before you came across this blog post. Many women will go through life not knowing they have it, or not knowing how to go about treating it once they are diagnosed.

While there is no cure for PCOS, you can certainly manage and treat your symptoms. The only known way to do this through weight loss and maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. According to studies a “decrease of just 5% of body mass can have a positive impact on PCOS.”

This is a topic that is very important and personal to us at NutriEats because I once suffered from PCOS. I struggled to treat it and for 5 years, I attempted to lose the weight through multiple well-known diets such as the 5:2 diet, the Atkins diet and the blood group diet. Nothing worked. None of these diets are sustainable and I was left frustrated and disheartened.

Once I embraced the NutriEats lifestyle, I lost 25kg in the span of two years and my symptoms disappeared! It was only through a healthy, well-balanced diet and regular exercise, the two key things we espouse here at NutriEats, that I managed to see and feel a difference in my body. I couldn’t be happier!

And I’m not the only one. NutriEats has worked with women who suffer from PCOS, and they have all experienced positive results!

BODY POWER 2016: MORE THAN A FITNESS EXPO.

A few weeks ago, after a tiring journey and not much sleep we arrived in Birmingham to attend our first BodyPower Expo!

Despite the fatigue we were very excited to be at the NEC arena, Birmingham. BodyPower is an annual event that hosts the biggest fitness and nutrition brands, providing visitors with lots of information, activities and food. Started in 2009, the expo now attracts over 90,000 visitors across the 3 day period.

We quickly realised that BodyPower is much more than a fitness expo. Every year BodyPower hosts a community of like-minded individuals who celebrate and appreciate healthy, fit, and strong bodies and promote a positive lifestyle. The atmosphere was incredible. We were surrounded by some of the healthiest people in the world who were all on their own individual fitness journeys. Muscles and curves are embraced and appreciated! It felt like everyone was on a natural high.

Once we arrived we were excited to interact with and see some of your favourite brands. We loved seeing USN at the expo. They had an epic stand! As you may know, we recently announced a new partnership with USN Kenya, which we’re very pleased about.

Gym shark was another brand that we were excited to see. Gym Shark was founded in the back rooms of Ben and Lewis’ houses. After realising there was a gap in the market, Ben and Lewis created a niche clothing brand that is tailored to a body builders’ physique. It is now one of the largest fitness apparel brands in the UK. We are inspired by these visionaries!

IMG_3354

Sonal, Lainey Bopster, Arjan and Lex Griffin

Meeting some of our favourite athletes was also definitely a highlight. Lex Griffin and his girlfriend Lainy Bopster was amazing and we enjoyed speaking to them! Lex took the time to engage with us and find common ground with everyone who came to his stand despite a very long queue.

Meeting Said Shavarshian was a particularly poignant moment for us. Said is the younger brother of the late fitness legend Zyzz Shavarishian who pioneered the promotion of a fit and healthy lifestyle using his social media platforms.

Zyzz amassed a huge following and has inspired us immensely so it was great to talk to Said and let him know that we feel that Zyzz’s legacy still lives on today. There is a bit of Zyzz that lives on in each one of us.

Rich Piana and Arjan

Rich Piana was another important personality that we had the pleasure of meeting.

Rich has built his company 5% Nutrition from the bottom up and is someone we look up to in business and as an athlete.

We love the 5% Nutrition apparel!

The entire arena was literally protein heaven! From ice cream, to protein bars the event served as a huge inspiration for us, especially with the NutriEats recipe book coming soon. One of our favourite protein bars made by Quest Nutrition, were also present. We really admire the way Quest develop their products. You get the sense that they really care about their customers.

Seeing legends such as Ronnie Coleman and CT Fletcher was fantastic. And although we did not get to see him, just knowing that Kai Greene was there was amazing.

Being at BodyPower reinforced something that we strongly believe in: everyone should strive to be the best version of themselves. It was inspiring to be amongst people who have taken their gym mentality and applied it to their personal lives, their businesses and their overall work ethic. It was clear to see that people live and breathe this lifestyle. It’s a lifestyle  that builds self esteem, encourages perseverance and provides you with a strong foundation for all other important life skills. We left the expo feeling very motivated.
NutriEats hopes to be at BodyPower 2017! No matter where you are on your fitness journey, whether you’re looking to lose weight or just get some credible information from top experts-we are sure that you will benefit from attending the expo. Hope to see you there!
